The parish falls under the Anglican Church of Southern Africa, within the Diocese of Johannesburg and is located in Zone 7 Meadowlands - SOWETO, under the city of Johannesburg Metropolitan Council. The Church of the Resurrection is located in a typical township setting and is surrounded by schools, old municipal houses, shack dwellings and interspersed middle income houses.
The church building was dedicated on the 19th of February 1961 by the then Dean of Johannesburg, Rev. P. H. F. Barron. Since its consecration, the parish has been blessed to have the following priests ministering to the community of Meadowlands. Over the years there has been a culture of open participation in church activities, embracing the various African cultures and integrating them into the Anglican liturgy.
MEMBERSHIP AND DEMOGRAPHICS
The church roll currently has approximately 1,200 registered members, who worship at either one of the two Sunday services. The membership of the church has fluctuated over the years with a number of parishioners leaving, some to join the new charismatic churches and others returning back to the fold.
Most of the registered members are residents of Meadowlands with a few coming from other suburbs within Soweto. There are also members who no longer reside in Meadowlands or Soweto but have a sentimental attachment to the church (going back to the days when their parents used to be members of the parish). Furthermore, the members are a mix of very influential, professionals (with high intellect), business and community leaders, skilled artisans as well as those of humble backgrounds.
The diversity within the parish provides for a stimulating environment where members are able to enrich each other on spiritual, family, social, political and business related matters.
